Something appealing about these two pressure domes for the mighty SLS booster. Nicely proportioned. The NASA Social has been amazing. Lots of pics on Twitter and elsewhere. I will post more here later.

To everyone who said NASA would eventually go tits-up, confirmed.

Yeah, that’s why they like it.

So, those look like 13 or more panels formed and welded together right?

What are they made from? It looks all bright & shiny metallic, and it’s for a rocket so, Al? Ti? If it’s Ti, how do they form the panels? I imagine hydroforming is difficult with Ti as it’s so resilient.

They are engineers, after all.

NASA Social sounds really cool. Have you ever been to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station? Went six or seven years ago. Was really cool to see all the old launch sites, block houses, and LC-34, with a recently used SLC-37 in the background. I’ll have to post my pictures from it.

Aluminum lithium. I still need to track down a rep to find out how they form them. They are joined via friction stir welding.

It was a privilege and probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. As far as cool places I’ve been go, this and inside Cheyenne Mountain are at the top of the list.

I suppose stir-friction weld is better to avoid inclusions, oxidation, & slag. Fancy.
